As a former college baseball player and now the dad to a young hockey player, you are an avid sports fan. What draws you to sports, and what similarities do you see between sports and leading a communications department?

I have to be honest here, calling myself a “college baseball player” is an exaggeration, and real college athletes would roll their eyes. I love competition, the camaraderie among teammates, and the thrill of accomplishing great things. Sports is a roller coaster ride of outcomes and emotions that I still crave. Leading a communications team is similar to sports in that it requires great teamwork, playing offense and defense, and being quick on your feet to handle curveballs. I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned from sports and my professional journey. Today, I’m just a dad cheering on my young hockey player and hoping he has a better sports career than his old man.

You come to One America Movement from a journalism background. What types of stories were some of your favorites to cover and why?

I’m passionate about stories that tackle national and global issues but are grounded in the everyday lives of ordinary people. There’s something truly meaningful about local stories that offer a window into different communities, allowing us to form genuine connections to various topics and issues through the eyes of authentic characters. These stories answer the question, “Why should I care?” and create shared experiences that can truly make a difference. The power of these micro observations is undeniable, and I believe they have the potential to profoundly impact the way people see the world.

Some examples:

-The restoration of bison to the great plains of Montana and what it means for the future of a classic American landscape and the families who have called it home for generations.

-How a change in US military strategy is affecting the lives of people who live near the front lines of eastern Afghanistan.

-The human impact of tourism in the Galapagos Islands.

What made you decide to join the One America Movement team?

At the One America Movement, I saw a wonderful opportunity to use storytelling as a force for hope, inspiration, and positive change. It was a chance to apply my skills and experiences to remind people of the core values we still share, even amid these unprecedented times in our nation’s history. I joined the One America Movement, an organization deeply committed to conversations and authenticity, where people talk openly to one another, not through each other. In addition, their focus on grassroots connected with my passion for local storytelling.
